The World Alliance for Arts Education´s World Summit of Arts Education

The World Alliance for Arts Education’s World Summit of Arts Education was held on 1-3rth  March in the island of  Madeira  with nearly 300 participants from 40 countries!

Building upon the outcomes of the two world conferences on arts education, held in 2006 in Lisbon and in 2010 in Seoul, and, the request of its Member States (Decision 211 EX/39), UNESCO is developing a global Framework on Culture and Arts Education, encompassing the various dimensions of culture, from heritage to arts and creativity.   The UNESCO Framework aims to build on the full potential of the culture-education nexus and to support Member States and other stakeholders to integrate culture into national educational policies, strategies and programmes, both in formal and non-formal education, including TVET and lifelong learning, as well as to leverage innovative pedagogical approaches to support the cultural and creative sector. This process is underpinned by an inclusive, global, multistakeholder consultation that encompasses UNESCO Member States, UNESCO Chairs/UNITWIN networks, UNESCO institutes, UNESCO Centres, NGOs such as WAAE, cultural institutions, educators and youth, as well as private sector foundations.
WAAE is  cooperating  with UNESCO and contribute to the process leading to the development of the Framework  by devising a survey to be disseminated among teachers and educators to identify their specific needs and recommendations with regards to culture and arts education, and production of a report on the survey findings to inform the draft UNESCO Framework.

During the Summit, two UNESCO official representatives  from  Culture and Education  led a panel session  about the framework, followed by  five dialogue sessions led by representatives of ISME; IDEA; InSEA and WDE to discuss  current issues and bring to light the visions and needs of teachers and educators in culture and arts education. Among the priorities raised were to allocate sufficient time in education and curricula for culture and the arts education, improve quality pre-service and in-service teacher education that recognizes cultural diversity and its cross-cutting role, strengthen the knowledge of teachers and learners on the opportunities and risks of digital technologies, and expand cooperation among a range of local actors to advance learning outcomes.

It also provided the setting to launch the online survey on culture and arts education, designed by the WAAE in consultation with UNESCO.

To ensure the inclusion of   the voices of arts educators from different geographical points in the 2023 WAAE/UNESCO survey on Culture and Arts Education , we ask you to help us by replying to a 20 mn questionnaire until the second week of April and disseminate it within your networks.
